The main political parties

Current domination of the socio-democrats of the SLD

In 2005, the main party in Poland is the Democratic Alliance of left (SLD, SOJUSZ LEWICY DEMOKRATYCZNEJ). Created in 1990 after the dissolution of the Communist Party, the SLD was gradually transformed into a traditional social democrat party. Its interventionists inclinations, appreciated by its voters, are seldom put in practice, owing to the commitments of Poland to the European Union and the international organizations rules.

The SLD shares the power with the Union of work (UP, UNIA PRACY), a small party with guidelines close to the SLD, and with the Agrarian Party (PSL, POLSKIE STRONNICTWO LUDOWE). Created during the communism, the PSL is traditionally well anchored in the rural areas. It is now in competition with Samoobrana, the radical and populist party of the demagogue Andrzej Lepper.

The difficult rebuilding of the right

On the right side, the Electoral alliance of Solidarity (AWS) was until the last elections a federator party of center right, in favour of fast reforms. Mined by internal quarrels, it exploded various parties, of which none succeeded in the Polish political scene.

The main successor of the AWS, AWSP (AKCJA WYBORCZA SOLIDARNOSC PRAWICY) did not reach the threshold necessary to its representation in the Diet. Just as UW (UNIA WOLNOSCI), a liberal party appreciated in the financial circles, in spite of its prestigious members such as Jacek Kuron, Tadeusz Mazowiecki and Leszek Balcerowicz.

Another party also resulting from the AWS, the civic Platform (PO, PLATFORMA OBYWATELSKA), seems to be able to impose itself as the main party of center-right. Its management focuses primarily on the questions of domestic policy. The preserving popular movement (SKL, STRONNICTWO KONSERWATYWNO LUDOWE), which had joined PO for the legislative elections in 2001, is also originating in the implosion of the AWS and acts similarly.

Minor on the political level, the extreme line is represented by the social Movement "Alternative" (RUCH SPOLECZNY ALTERNATYWA), which succeeded in 2001 to the Confederation for Independent Poland (KONFEDERACJA POLSKI NIEPODLEGLE).
