The automobile sector in Poland |

The Polish automobile sector evolved in three stages. Between 1992 and 1999, it
passed from 200 000 unities sold a year to more than 650 000 vehicles. This jump
was made by the rise of the capacity of purchase of the Poles and also by an easier
access to the appropriations, in particular with arrival of the societies of credit
of the groups FIAT, Renault, PSA and Volkswagen. Strongly touched by the deceleration
of the Polish economy , the market then fell until 2003. Since, it is rectified
slightly, under various impact of measures taken by the Government. The Polish automobile park was composed in 2004 of 11,5 million cars. Between 1990 and 2004, it passed from 138 cars registered for 1000 inhabitants, to 3000 cars. 45 % of the Poles do not have vehicles and only 8 % of the households have more then one car. The cars are generally bought used. Among the four manufacturers present in Poland, FIAT Car Poland (FAP) dominated in 2004 with approximately 60 % of the total production, against a little more than 20 % of Opel and less than 10 % of Volkswagen and Daewoo. In terms of local sales, FIAT dominates the market, follow-up of Skoda, Renault, Toyota, Opel and PSA. But from the 500 000 vehicles produced in Poland, only 12 % are intended for the local market. Exportation became essential, because of opening of the Polish market. With more than four billion dollars of exports, Poland is a major exporter of cars, but also of spare parts and other accessories. The principal customers are in Italy, in Germany, in Belgium and Ukraine for the vehicles, and primarily in Germany for the spare parts. Useful addresses • Polska Izba Motoryzacji •
